To know me is to know I don’t have the best eyesight in the world. Things could be a little more in focus for me, and my depth perception isn’t the greatest. This combination makes riding with me while driving at night especially exciting. Color, on the other hand, is something I think I can see pretty well. I may not be very tall. I may not be very wealthy. But I am also not color-blind (or so I believe). And that’s something.
As such, most (well, all) of my images are captured in color and stay in color. I try to optimize color, making it as accurate as possible or, more often, creatively correct. I love that term – creatively correct. It’s such a smart-sounding way to imply a bit of a gray area for things that otherwise would either be correct or not correct. And since we’re talking about a gray area when it comes to color, that amuses me even more.
But enough of that. The point is that I captured a scene that I felt had enough contrast and detail to warrant a black and white treatment.
This was taken on the afternoon of Christmas Eve from my back deck and was supposed to be an exercise for me to practice composition. See how the horizon isn’t exactly across the middle? Okay, composition practiced. I should have thought of this as an exercise in light metering because the sky and mountains were so bright and the foreground trees so dark that my camera’s dynamic range was exceeded. I decided I wanted the mountains to be the main subject, so I metered on the big one toward the right (bonus points if you can name that peak).
Post processing was done mainly in Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro. After that, I returned to Lightroom to, well, actually things didn’t work out so well in Lightroom for this image. There seems to be some kind of on-going computer-related misunderstanding that you could read about here if you were a member of NAPP.
Anyway, this is the first black and white image I’ve posted on this site.
